F1 wheel tethers explained

Wheel tethers connect each upright to strong parts of the chassis or gearbox so a detached suspension corner is less likely to become a dangerous projectile.

Why wheels need restraints

A wheel and tyre carry substantial mass and energy. If released in a crash, they can endanger the driver, marshals and spectators far beyond the initial impact.

Independent paths

Current rules require separately attached tethers so one failed connection does not automatically defeat the whole retention system.

What a tether can and cannot do

The system reduces the chance of a free wheel but cannot guarantee a suspension assembly remains undamaged. Severe impacts can still exceed the intended load path.
