Graining occurs when a tyre slides, tears small pieces from its tread and picks them back up, leaving an uneven surface that reduces the contact quality and grip.

How it begins

When the tread surface cannot match the demanded force, it shears across the track. Hot rubber rolls away and can reattach to the tyre.

The car loses predictable grip and may slide more, which generates yet more surface damage if the driver cannot manage the phase.

Graining versus wear

Graining is a surface condition, not simply the tyre becoming thinner. In some circumstances the rough layer clears and performance recovers.
