F1 tyre degradation explained

Why lap time fades as heat, wear and repeated load change a tyre's performance.

Quick answer

Tyre degradation is the loss of performance over a stint. It can come from physical wear, excessive temperature, surface damage or changes inside the tyre even before the tread is exhausted.

Thermal degradation

Repeatedly overheating the rubber changes how it delivers grip. Sliding can create a feedback loop in which lost grip produces still more heat and further performance loss.

Wear and damage

Rubber is gradually removed, while graining, blistering or a flat spot can add their own penalty. Different circuits stress different corners of the car.

Why management can be faster

A driver who gives up a small amount of lap time early may keep the tyre competitive for longer, avoid an extra stop and produce a quicker total race time.
