The sudden lap-time loss that can follow a more gradual period of tyre degradation.

Quick answer

The tyre cliff is a sharp fall in performance when a tyre moves beyond a usable condition or temperature window. It is not a guaranteed lap number: car setup, driving, traffic, track temperature and damage all affect when or whether it appears.

Gradual loss becomes steep

Tyres normally lose pace as rubber wears and heat cycles accumulate. Once grip loss causes more sliding and heat, the deterioration can reinforce itself and lap time rises much faster.

Signals on the car

Drivers may report poor traction, understeer or sudden instability while engineers see changing temperatures and lap-time trends. Traffic can mask the warning until the car reaches clean air.

The strategy response

Teams try to stop before the expected cliff while preserving a useful rejoin position. Extending the stint may still be rational if a pit stop would place the driver in worse traffic or outside a Safety Car opportunity.
