Track evolution is the change in grip as rubber builds on the racing line, dust clears and temperatures shift. Later qualifying runners may gain a faster surface, unless weather or contamination reverses the trend.

Rubbering in

Tyres deposit rubber where cars repeatedly brake, turn and accelerate. That layer can improve adhesion compared with a dusty or unused surface.

Why timing matters

Qualifying teams often want to cross the line late enough to benefit from evolution but early enough to avoid traffic, yellow flags or the session clock.

When evolution goes backwards

Rain can wash rubber away, oil or debris can reduce grip, and falling track temperature can make tyres harder to prepare even when the line looks cleaner.
