How an F1 Sprint weekend works
A Sprint weekend adds a short race and Sprint Qualifying while reducing normal practice time.

Quick answer
Sprint weekends usually feature one practice, Sprint Qualifying, a short Sprint race, Grand Prix qualifying and the Sunday Grand Prix. The Sprint awards points but does not replace the main race.
01
Two competitions
Sprint Qualifying sets the Sprint order; Grand Prix qualifying separately sets Sunday's grid. A poor Sprint does not automatically dictate the Grand Prix start.
02
Why practice matters more
Teams have less running before competitive sessions, so setup confidence and simulator preparation become more valuable.
03
Check each season
The FIA can refine session names, lengths and tyre rules. Use the current sporting regulations and event schedule rather than an old format diagram.
