The F1 sequential gearbox explained

How paddle commands move rapidly through a fixed sequence of racing ratios.

Quick answer

An F1 gearbox changes through sequential ratios using steering-wheel paddles and hydraulic actuation. The driver requests each shift while electronic controls protect the powertrain within the rules.

Sequential movement

Unlike an H-pattern road gearbox, the mechanism steps up or down through the ratio order. That makes shifts fast and removes the need to select a distant gate.

Shift control

The driver pulls a paddle, and control logic coordinates torque reduction, actuator movement and reapplication so the shift completes without destructive load.

Part of the chassis

The casing sits between the power unit and rear suspension, carrying structural loads and influencing wheelbase, cooling and aerodynamic packaging.
