The Formula 1 race start procedure explained
From the formation lap and grid lights to the moment the race officially begins.
Quick answer
Cars complete the formation lap, stop in their grid positions and wait for the start-light sequence. When all red lights extinguish, the race starts unless an aborted-start procedure intervenes.

Building the grid
Drivers warm tyres and brakes, practise the final approach and stop inside their marked grid boxes while officials confirm the field is ready.

The lights
Five red lights illuminate in sequence and then go out after a variable pause. Reaction, clutch control, traction and 2026 turbo response shape the launch.

If something is wrong
A driver or official can signal a problem. Race control may use an extra formation lap, delayed start or other prescribed procedure.
