How the 2026 F1 MGU-K works
The powerful motor-generator that turns recovered kinetic energy into acceleration.

Quick answer
The MGU-K converts kinetic energy into electricity while the car slows, stores it in the Energy Store and reverses the process to deliver up to 350 kW to the rear wheels.
Motor and generator
The same unit performs two jobs. During harvesting it resists the drivetrain and generates electricity; during deployment it consumes stored electricity to add torque.
Why it matters more in 2026
Its maximum output rises from the previous generation's 120 kW to 350 kW, putting electrical energy much closer to the centre of every attack, defence and qualifying lap.
The limiting resource
Maximum power is only useful while the car has energy available and the rules permit deployment. Teams therefore optimise the full lap, not just the largest number.
