Lift and coast in Formula 1 explained

The deliberate early throttle release used to save fuel, control heat or recover energy.

Quick answer

The driver lifts off the throttle before the normal braking point and lets aerodynamic and drivetrain resistance slow the car before braking. This reduces fuel use and thermal load and can support recharge.

Why not stay flat longer

The last part of a straight may deliver little lap-time gain for substantial fuel and braking cost. Lifting early can be the faster race-wide choice.

Hybrid benefit

The 2026 system can use lift-off phases as part of its Recharge strategy, although active-aero and power-unit behaviour follow specific conditions.

How viewers recognise it

Telemetry may show throttle dropping before the brake trace begins. Radio messages often specify a lift distance or target.
