Lapped cars behind the F1 Safety Car explained
Why race control may let selected cars overtake the Safety Car before a restart.
Quick answer
Under the prescribed procedure, race control may instruct eligible lapped cars to pass the cars on the lead lap and the Safety Car, then continue around to restore the order before the restart.
Why unlapping exists
Removing lapped traffic from between lead-lap cars can restore a more natural running order and prevent backmarkers from sitting inside the main restart battle.
It is not automatic
Drivers act only on race control's message. Operational constraints, track conditions and the remaining time can affect which procedure is used.
Returning to the queue
An instructed car passes safely and completes the lap needed to rejoin at the back. It is still racing, but must follow the speed and safety requirements of the neutralised period.
