How the Formula 1 Halo works

The Halo is a three-point titanium structure mounted around the cockpit. It creates a protected space around the driver's head and transfers major impact loads into the survival cell.

What it protects against

The structure is intended to deflect or support large objects such as another car, a wheel or heavy debris that could otherwise enter the open cockpit area.

Why the chassis matters

A strong Halo is only useful if its mountings can carry the force. The survival cell and attachment points therefore undergo prescribed FIA load testing as one safety system.

Driver visibility

The central pillar sits close to the driver's line of sight, so binocular vision allows the brain to look around it. Drivers adapt quickly while retaining open-cockpit peripheral vision.
