F1 tyre flat spots explained

The localised tyre damage caused when a locked wheel slides across the asphalt.

Quick answer

A flat spot forms when a tyre stops rotating while the car continues moving, grinding one section of tread against the track. The uneven tyre then causes vibration and lost grip.

The lock-up

If braking demand exceeds available grip, a wheel can stop. Because the same patch remains against the moving road, it wears much faster than the rest of the circumference.

What the driver feels

The damaged tyre produces a rhythmic vibration that increases with speed. It can affect vision, confidence and the loads transmitted into suspension and bodywork.

Can it be repaired

The missing rubber cannot be restored. A light flat spot may be managed, but a serious vibration or structural concern makes replacement the safer option.
