F1 dampers explained

How dampers control suspension motion instead of carrying the car like a spring.

Dampers resist the speed of suspension movement, controlling how quickly the car compresses and rebounds. Springs support the load; dampers prevent uncontrolled oscillation.

Spring versus damper

A compressed spring stores energy and tries to release it. The damper dissipates part of that energy so the car does not continue bouncing after a kerb or load change.

Setup effect

Different resistance in compression and rebound changes kerb behaviour, braking support and how rapidly aerodynamic load moves the chassis.

The compromise

Too much damping can stop a tyre following the surface; too little allows the platform to move excessively. Teams tune within the mechanical and regulatory limits.
