How sacrificial nose, side and rear structures absorb energy around the survival cell.

F1 crash structures are designed to deform progressively during an impact, absorbing energy before it reaches the survival cell. Front, side and rear protection must meet FIA test requirements.

Managing energy

A perfectly rigid outer structure would transmit a sharp deceleration to the driver. Controlled crushing spreads the energy over distance and time while the cockpit remains intact.

Different impact directions

The nose addresses frontal loads, side structures manage broadside contact and a rear impact structure protects the back of the car. Roll structures cover overturning loads.

After an accident

A damaged structure may have done its job even when it looks destroyed. Teams and officials inspect the survival cell and attachments before any further use.
