Deploying earlier on a straight can improve speed for longer, but saving energy may be more valuable before the circuit's best overtaking opportunity.

Recovering energy adds resistance or changes acceleration. Engineers look for braking and partial-throttle phases where that cost is smallest.

A driver in clean air may optimise total lap time; a driver fighting another car may prioritise the few seconds that decide an overtake.
