Quick answer

Downforce increases tyre grip but most devices that create it also add drag. Teams search for the lap-time optimum, not the highest possible value of either one.

Corner benefit

Pushing the tyres harder into the surface lets them generate greater lateral and braking force, so high-downforce configurations improve corner speed.

Straight-line cost

Aerodynamic load requires the car to do work on the air. The resulting resistance reduces acceleration and increases the energy needed to sustain speed.

Why 2026 is different

Corner and Straight modes allow the car to change configuration in approved areas, keeping grip where it is needed and shedding resistance on straights.
