Dirty air in Formula 1 explained

Why turbulent wake makes a following car slide even while a slipstream helps it on a straight.

Dirty air is the disturbed, lower-quality airflow behind a car. It can reduce the following car's aerodynamic load in corners, overheating the tyres and making close pursuit harder.

A car changes the air

Wings, wheels and cooling flows leave rotating structures and pressure deficits behind. A following car no longer receives the clean conditions its surfaces were designed around.

Why drivers slide

Reduced aerodynamic load asks the tyres to work at a less favourable point. The driver may need to slow or move away from the wake to protect the front tyres.

The regulation goal

Modern rules try to manage wake so more useful load remains when following. They cannot remove the physical disturbance entirely.
