What changed about F1 tyres in 2026
Formula 1 keeps 18-inch wheels while reducing tyre width for the smaller car concept.

Quick answer
The 18-inch wheel diameter remains, but the front and rear tyres become narrower. The goal is to cut weight and aerodynamic disturbance with minimal loss of usable grip.
01
Why narrower tyres
Tyres are heavy rotating components and major airflow obstacles. Reducing their width supports the lighter, narrower vehicle concept.
02
Grip is not just width
Construction, compound, load and temperature all shape available grip. A narrower tyre does not translate directly into the same percentage loss in cornering performance.
03
What viewers will still see
Warm-up, degradation, graining, overheating and strategic compound choices remain central to a race weekend.
