A technical directive communicates how the FIA interprets, measures or enforces an existing technical requirement. It does not replace the published regulations, but it can materially change which designs or operating methods officials will accept.
Why clarification is needed
Technical rules cannot describe every design detail or unexpected method teams may develop. Questions from competitors and inspection findings can expose areas where a common enforcement position is necessary.
What a directive can do
The FIA may explain how wording will be interpreted, which evidence must be supplied or how flexibility, wear, software or operation will be tested. Teams then assess whether their cars remain compliant.
Directive versus regulation
The regulation remains the legal foundation, while the directive communicates the governing body's current application of it. Formal rule changes follow the amendment processes defined by the sport's governance documents.
