F1 red flag rules explained
What happens when a session is stopped and cars return to the pit lane.

Quick answer
A red flag suspends the session. Drivers slow, overtaking is prohibited and cars follow race-control instructions to the pit lane or another designated location.
01
Why a session is stopped
A blocked track, damaged barrier, extreme weather or unsafe recovery operation can make neutralised circulation insufficient.
02
Work during suspension
Only work allowed by the current sporting regulations may be completed. Tyre and repair rules have changed between seasons, so old examples can mislead.
03
Resuming
The race may resume behind the Safety Car or with another prescribed start procedure. If it cannot resume, classification and points depend on the completed distance and rules.
