F1 fastest-lap rules explained
What an official fastest race lap records and why it no longer awards a championship bonus point.
Quick answer
The fastest lap is the quickest valid lap recorded during the race and remains part of the official classification data. Under the current 2026 points rules, it does not award an extra championship point or change the driver's finishing position.
How it is measured
Official timing compares every completed valid race lap. The classification identifies the driver, lap number and time associated with the quickest one.
No current bonus point
The former bonus-point rule was removed before the 2025 season. A driver may still pursue the fastest lap for performance information or sporting interest, but it adds no championship point in 2026.
Why late attempts happen
A driver with a sufficient gap may stop for fresh tyres and attempt a quick lap without losing track position. Teams still weigh that opportunity against pit-stop risk and the value of simply reaching the finish.
