F1 tyre pressure explained

Why starting pressure is controlled and how heat changes the tyre during a run.

Tyre pressure supports the tyre structure and changes as temperature rises. Minimum starting requirements protect integrity, while teams tune within the permitted window for grip, stiffness and temperature behaviour.

The structural job

Internal pressure helps the tyre carry load and maintain shape at high speed. Running too low can overwork the sidewall and create excessive deformation.

Performance trade

Lower pressure can enlarge or reshape the contact patch but make the tyre move more; higher pressure stiffens response and changes temperature distribution.

Event requirements

The supplier and officials issue applicable limits and measurement procedures for each event. Teams monitor blankets, ambient conditions and running pressure around those constraints.
