Blue flags in Formula 1 explained
Why blue flags mean different things in practice, qualifying and the race.
Quick answer
In practice or qualifying, a blue flag warns that a faster car is approaching. In a race, it orders a car about to be lapped to let the faster car pass at the earliest safe opportunity.
Practice and qualifying
A driver on a slow lap is alerted to a much faster car behind. The slower driver must remain predictable and avoid impeding the approaching timed lap.
During the race
The signal is shown when a leading car catches traffic by a full lap. The lapped car should facilitate the pass safely instead of defending track position.
Not an instant disappearance
The driver still has to choose a safe location. Moving unpredictably in a braking zone can create more danger than waiting briefly for a suitable straight.
