Black flags in Formula 1 explained
The difference between the black flag and the black flag with an orange disc.
Quick answer
A plain black flag disqualifies the named driver and orders them to return to the pits. A black flag with an orange disc warns that the car has a dangerous mechanical problem that must be addressed.
The plain black flag
Only the stewards order this rare signal. The driver must stop competing and return to the garage rather than continuing to race the field.
The orange disc
Sometimes called the meatball flag, it tells a team that the car may endanger its driver or others. The car must pit, and it can only continue if the problem is rectified to the officials' satisfaction.
Why television graphics matter
Digital panels and timing messages repeat the instruction because the small flag must be associated with a specific race number at very high speed.
